Nova Southeastern University’s fully online Master of Science (M.S.) in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) prepares educators and other professionals to develop expertise in English language teaching, language acquisition, curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The program develops expertise in language teaching and learning, instructional strategies, curriculum development, language assessment, educational research, and evidence-based practices that support multilingual learners and English language instruction. This program does not lead to teacher certification or state licensure.
Designed for working professionals, NSU’s flexible online program can be completed in as little as 24 months. Through a research-informed curriculum, you’ll develop practical expertise in language instruction, language acquisition, instructional strategies, assessment, curriculum development, and educational research. You’ll learn to design engaging language learning experiences, apply evidence-based teaching practices, assess language development, develop and implement curriculum, and support multilingual learners across educational and professional settings. Coursework led by experienced university faculty connects educational research with current teaching practices and real-world applications.
Graduates may pursue opportunities in K-12 schools, colleges, universities, language programs, educational organizations, corporate learning environments, and other education-focused settings, with roles such as ESOL coordinator, English language program coordinator, ESL/EFL program specialist, English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instructor, instructional coordinator, and other language learning and educational support positions. Some positions may require state certification, licensure, endorsements, professional experience, or other credentials. Employment and credential requirements vary by state and employer. This program does not lead to teacher certification or state licensure.

The applied professional experience is the capstone in the completion of this program. Conducted in an appropriate educational setting, candidates will maintain reflective journals and create files of samples of their students' work and the assessment instruments used to demonstrate achievement of the state professional and content standards. All applied professional experiences are accompanied by a portfolio detailing the rationale, process, and evaluation of the project. This course is one of the many practical applications included in the program.
