Lina Lopez Chiappone, Ph.D., is associate professor of TESOL in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at NSU's Abraham S. Fischler College of Education. Dr. Chiappone earned her doctorate in TESOL and Reading Education at the University of Miami, where she taught in the Department of Teaching and Learning and conducted literacy research in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) as part of several federal grants. She was also project director for a research study of best literacy practices with English language learners in urban settings. Prior to that, Dr. Chiappone was a teacher for 10 years in M-DCPS, working primarily with the dropout prevention program at the elementary level. At Fischler, Dr. Chiappone has taught in both domestic and international programs located in Belize, Jamaica, Turks and Caicos, and Ecuador. Dr. Chiappone is also part of a Fischler research team studying the effects of infusing disciplinary reading strategies and media into STEM curricula in urban schools with high populations of struggling readers. She is the co-editor of the Florida Reading Journal.
