Shirley Counsil has taught AP English for 24 of her 34 years; whereby, she has gained much experience throughout the process. She began her career with the College Board in 1993 as a reader for the English Language and Composition exam and later became a table leader in 2001 for that exam. She also has been a reader for the National Teacher’s Exam, the SSAT, the GMAT, and the CLEP exam. She has been a consultant for the College Board since 1999 and has presented numerous one-day, two-day, and week-long Advanced Placement Summer Institutes since then. She has presented several institutes internationally. Additionally, she is trained to present many Pre-AP workshops.
She has also worked directly with the College Board in New York as the project manager for the development of two new workshops. The College Board has asked her to serve as a mentor to new consultants, and she has acted in that role for the last five years. Finally, a couple of years ago she took on the task of writing a significant portion of the Instructor’s Manual for the Bedford Anthology of Literature.
