Social Studies Education

The Fischler College of Education is no longer accepting new applicants for this program.

The M.S. in Education with a specialization in Social Studies Education focuses on preparing educators in the areas of history, geography, economics, and government for secondary school students. This specialization provides educators with the skills to develop curriculum and instruct students using a variety of learning techniques. Course content is research-based and infuses best practices in education.

  • Completed admission application packet, including $50 nonrefundable application fee made payable to Nova Southeastern University.
  • Official transcripts indicating conferral of a bachelor’s degree by a regionally accredited institution (minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average required) or the completion of one of the alternative admission requirements.
  • Official transcripts from all previously attended post-secondary institutions.

Coursework for the secondary social studies education specialization is conducted entirely online. This approach allows students to receive and submit coursework and interact with participants and professors via the Internet. This distance delivery option allows busy professionals to complete their degrees without having to leave their jobs or travel long distances.

The applied professional experience provides the opportunity for the candidates to integrate the content knowledge and the professional development skills acquired in their graduate courses to social studies classrooms at the middle and secondary school levels. These applied professional experiences allow the graduate students to demonstrate effective teaching practices that increase student learning.

Faculty members for the master of science in education are scholars and educators from Nova Southeastern University and other major universities and institutions throughout the country. In addition many are also highly respected professional practitioners, who are carefully selected on the basis of their subject expertise, teaching abilities, and professional involvement. Most importantly, they are united in their desire to not only educate, but to inspire students to use what they learn to motivate others.

  • Satisfactory completion of all required coursework;
  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher;
  • Successful completion of the Applied Professional Experience and the portfolio, demonstrating com­petence with the Educator Accomplished Practices;
  • Completed application for degree.

Students are advised to contact their state department of education or an Enrollment Services Representative (Academic Advisor) to determine if this program is suitable for certification/licensure and their career goals.
