This program provides educators with the skills to develop curriculum and assess, evaluate, and instruct students in reading. NSU’s M.S. in Reading Education is offered in two track options: Florida state-approved and non-certification. Our course content is research-based and infuses scientifically-based evidence of best practices in the science of reading. A master’s degree in education with a concentration in reading can help you make an impact in the lives of children and adults, while driving your career forward.

Two Ways to Dominate

Florida Certification Track

This is a state-approved program in Florida for add-on certification for teachers. Course content is research based and infuses best practices in education, while aligning directly with the Florida Department of Education’s program certification requirements. Additional admission and graduation requirements. 

Who Can Apply:

  • Practicing reading and language arts educators who wish to obtain graduate degrees or recertification and/or increase their level of expertise
  • Those with a bachelor's degree in the education field who wish to obtain graduate degrees, recertification and/or add a certification in reading education

Degree-Only Track

This track provides educators with the skills to develop a curriculum and assess, evaluate, and instruct students in reading. Strengthen the relationship between theory and instructional practice while deepening professional knowledge and skills to provide effective literacy instruction. This program does not result in certification.

Who Can Apply:

  • Reading and language arts educators and those with bachelor's degrees who wish to obtain a graduate degree and/or increase their knowledge, skills or level of expertise in this area

M.S. in Reading Education Professional Licensure Disclosure

*NOTE: Candidates without an ESOL endorsement must take TSOL 510.

The applied professional experience is one of many practical applications included in the reading education specialization. It is the final step in the completion of the program. The candidates will be engaged in a supervised practicum involving problem-solving experiences designed to improve reading related challenges. Based on a thorough review of the reading research literature and knowledge gained in coursework and field experiences, the candidate will select, plan, and use appropriate reading assessment instruments , strategies and materials to identify needs and provide remedial reading instruction for a designated period of time in a K-12 classroom. Candidates will maintain reflective journals and create files of samples of their students’ work and the assessment instruments used to demonstrate achievement of the state professional and content standards.
